False Ceilings, L Coves and Lighting Options
As a general rule of thumb, when you light up a room you should try to have options:
- accent lighting
- accent lighting
- ambient lighting
- task lighting
Furthermore, you should consider lights in different temperatures to create different moods.
One choice of accent lighting is the use of L coves. The lights are hidden in a recess which can be located in a false ceiling running around the sides of the ceiling, or as a central board right in the middle of the room.
The former involves the use of a L Cove, where there is a drop from the ceiling in the shape of the letter L, and typically the drop is around 100-200mm, allowing the light to shine outwards.
However if this typical drop is used, there is a high chance you will only enjoy accent lighting, but the light will not be able to illuminate the room. So it depends on what you want. If you intend to light up the room, then the drop has to be around 400mm for the light to shine outwards, and reflect off the ceiling.
The color of the ceiling matters too. The lighter the color, the more bright the room will be.
Also, do mark out the site of the drivers. The LED bulbs themselves will not spoil, but the drivers may die a premature death.
If you use the central board, it can become a sounding board or drum and vibrate a lot if you are intending to put a sound system in the room.
Do consider adding some downlights for task lighting too.
