Food In Sydney - drool drool...
Whether it's your first time, or you are a seasoned traveler to Sydney, there's something for everyone, even vegans and gluten free lovers.
And no, it's not just fish and chips or a pie...
First try the local food guides sites, but the general rule on long queues will help you along.
Sydney is good for
- pho - almost any stall is decent due to the good quality beef
- beef pies or any other pies - Harry's pie is famous but again, even those at gas stations are not too bad
- steaks - again beef is good in Oz, so most places even the basic budget joints get good cuts and contrary to what you think it's not fresh. The best restaurants advertise aged beef...
- dim sum, but bear in mind, Chinese food is a little more oily and salty ala Japan compared to SG, it's just that SG has become more healthy
- fish and chips, the is a nice one along the pier itself and another at Manly but most places serve very nice fish and chips, vinegar is an acquired taste so go easy... and to some it's a travesty to use chili ok, so BYO...
- pizza, Mario's at Crydon is my comfort food but it's quite far, so go to Little Italy for the best, Liechardt isn't in town though, but the gelatos and pizzas are solid
- Surrey Hills is a gentrified area with good food
- ramen and sashimi. Again seafood is super because of the ocean catch. Salmon is super, be it raw or smoked or grilled, less seasoning is best
- Middle Eastern - El Jannah is one of my all time favorite chicken, and the kebabs as well as the Lebanese desserts will sweeten the deal.
- coffee - those hole in the wall places are some of the best but if you want to sit down Campos Coffee is ubiquitous, no Starbucks, that's like longkang water to the Aussies...
You also have some interesting chocolate bars, and plenty of ice cream or gelato parlours that will help wash down the mains.
Basically Syd is a wonderful place to eat out, but it is costly and you will need $25-30 per pax for a solid meal. Go Chinese or Viet to save, eg a bowl of wanton or pho is usually under $15 with free tea.
To save some, you can cook in an air bnb but do try the local fare especially the seafood, and go to the seafood market early and enjoy the atmosphere...
