Deadpool and wolverine movie review
The MCU has been in a rather deep funk ever since endgame .. apart from Spiderman who continues to grow strength to strength, the rest of the rest productions have been a little bit boring and directionless.
Deadpool is borne entirely out of Ryan Reynolds's efforts to bring it to the screen and he has done well but can he bring the shine back to Marvel ?
I'll save you the suspense and I'll say I've not felt emotionally involved in a superhero movie as much as this as the first Wonder Woman from a different franchise or Logan .. the latter was meant to be a swan song to Hugh Jackson and mark an end to Wolverine. I'm biased towards Spiderman so No Way Home was a home run too, pun intended.
Most ensemble action movies have plenty of explosions and good action but they seldom evoke any emotional response. The grenade scene from captain America one was a good one for example, the final scene in infinity war was too and the finale in endgame was another good climax.
Here Deadpool has to resuscitate his world with the aid of some superheroes stuck in some kind of purgatory and the entire exercise is a play to showcase some of our favorite superhero characters and even villains, bringing back some of the biggest fan favorites since Endgame. Despite the limited exposure times for some of them, you could still see the positive reactions they invoked when heroes like Chris Evans, Wesley Snipes or even Jennifer Garner came on.
But the overuse of montages and cameos can overwhelm if the plot and more importantly the screen chemistry is poor. On this front, Reynold and Jackman could have been joined at the hip (and they were stuck together literally in more than a few scenes) as they generated laughs and great camaraderie to keep the movie moving along very nicely.
These two made this movie to be more than just action and eye candy, giving the movie substance and an emotional depth that made this movie stand out from the pack of nameless and mass manufactured films that Disney kept churning out to capitalize on the positive reactions that RDJ's avengers and that series generated.
The movie moves along quite nicely but slows down long enough for one or two emotional moments that give Hugh a chance to show off his acting chops amidst all the jabbering by the Merc with the mouth and rise this from just a funny action superhero movie to one that carries some layers and reaches out to fans from across two decades of this franchise. It even appeals to comic book readers from way back with the wolverine's costume and some nods to past movies definitely did no harm.
Thankfully it does not OD on nostalgia alone and whilst it still uses the multiverse as a backbone there are enough new story elements to keep things fresh and of course MCU didn’t not have the Mouth to spice things up. Good pacing and laughs sustains the movie between the action.
The CGI was also impressive unlike some recent outings. Add good choreography in the fights (much better than Ben Affleck's Batman) and it gets the job done more than any recently marvel movie with the exception of Spiderman No Way Home
The only nasty scene was Channing Tatum's Gambit. Awful accent and an entirely unnecessary and forgettable character and performance. I guess there were enough of his fans in the focus groups.
Despite that blip, this outing probably saved Kevin Feige from another embarrassing loss and indeed it made good money at the box office.
Add some very fine songs from the past and you have a sweet box office hit
Recommended and also demo material for a home theater.
