Midnight Mass Netflix Series Review

Shows that involve religion can be very straight jacket affairs or the presence of a church is just a background setting for someone in it, or a tool in the fight of good versus evil. That last one is often used in shows of a supernatural nature but here, the new Netflix series "Midnight Mass" actually depicts a fairly accurate portrayal of the ongoings of a typical Catholic church, set on an island called Crockett Island and what follows after a seemingly new priest comes to the island.

Once the new priests comes in, many usual and supernatural things happen, and very soon, the inhabitants realise that there is more than meets the eye.

Some horror shows rely on the shock or slash factor, but this miniseries is a much slower burn, with plenty of character development, from the drunk driver prodigal son who returns, the pregnant single mum to the aforementioned priest and many more. These days, there must be an obligatory LBGT angle and there's a doctor who plays a very important role in the latter half of the show.

Religion is also used to polarise and contrast, with the presence of a Muslim Sheriff, and his son, who is bored to tears on an island which has a tiny population, few young people and very little to do.

You won't get to the dark secrets until the third episode, but the plot is quite tight, apart from the frequent dialogue expositions, which can bore or be draggy if you are only into action. But the suspense build up is a slow boil and there is palpable tension which so thick, you can cut it with a knife.

This series comes with Dolby Vision and Atmos, and the soundtrack is outstanding. Even though it's lossy, the amount of bass as well as the excellent use of the surround and Atmos channels will please most HT fans.

With a good plot, excellent chemistry amongst the actors and a demo quality soundtrack, this series is highly recommended.
