I guess I'm a little late on the scene in posting my review of this wonderful sub. My journey with it has been a long and enjoyable one, with sweet partings and re-acquaintances.

I initially bought a brace of them a while back at it's launch, and they served me well, but due to space issues, I had to sell them off when I shifted to a small (tiny) apartment. They were too powerful, and my neighbours weren't too enamoured with the superb bass reproduction, and the newly minted wife was also not too impressed.

I then moved to a new pad and after trying out a few alternatives, I'm back with another brace of them.

As you can tell, my experience with them has been good. The concept of a sealed sub with a powerful amp, in an extremely well constructed box is a good one and there are many other reviews praising this sub.

The key things:

Good ergonomics and construction:
The control panel is accessible from the top, which is something you don't find commonly.
The cabinet is one hefty one, and the 80 lbs weight means that the cabinet won't 'walk' when you are playing some deep bass. It also means you should get some help when you try and move it around. The black ash veneer finish is well applied and you save some money on the gloss option.

Well made woofer:
This woofer is made for long travel, and made to last even when you subject it to all kinds of abuse. 3" peak to peak excursion is not something to laugh at.

Powerful Amp:
1500W is enough to make sure you get the most out of the heavy woofer, whilst allowing control. It does run a bit warm, so give it some ventilation space. There are inputs and outputs for a daisy chain if you want to.

How does it sound?

I usually this sub for both music and movies and I've never felt that it was lacking in anything for either. It goes deep, whilst remaining tight and it gets loud. For anyone using a mid size room one of them will energise the entire room easily. Two of them will help even out the bass and can fill a larger room with ease. Your neighbours will know that you have bought new subs. There is a feeling that the subs have plenty of reserve, even when you go to insane volumes.

There is little distortion, and the woofer starts and stops nicely which means your music listening experience is heightened with the addition of the sub, without the boominess some subs may have.
You get agility and depth, something I found in the old REL subs, which is not so easily found even at higher prices.

At the same time, the sub can really give out SPLs. It manages to open and close the doors in my home! Now there are subs which can play louder, but loud and tight are adjectives for a sub that you want to hear together and it costs money to get that.

Considering that you can get cheap alternative, are they worth the money? I think that you will definitely feel, and hear where the money went to, and having played with several low cost alternatives, the best endorsement I can give is that I have come full circle back to owning two of them.

Enough said.

  1. Hi Pete, I know you wrote this a while ago but I'm in the market for a new sub currently and the JL E112 is on my list. I'm curious if you ever heard the B&W DB2D during your journey to compare to the JL? Also do you happen to recall how much you paid for them (and was it the gloss or the ash)? They have just put the RRP up $500 yet it's still the same price in the US so they are pretty damn expensive now.

My primary use will be for HT and I'm running Focal Aria (936 mains)all around and my room is about 4x5m.

Hopefully you see this to reply :)

    Cheers

    1. I have not heard them I'm afraid. Talk to your local rep for the latest prices, and also look around for alternatives based on your budget if these have gotten too expensive. Good luck
