The Search For A Replacement Car after the PARF changes
What a difference a month or so makes...
Just a little sharing and my opinion, TLDR
No one expected the massive change, and friends messaged me about the PARF changes, which have changed the buying landscape for most..
If you have deep pockets, and can commit big piles of cash without any concerns, then this isn't really huge. However if you are bound by more financial constraints, and take time to choose, don't fret, nor be pressured into committing. Take as long as you need. The car landscape has changed significantly in the past few years, in terms of models available, type of car, type of engine, and is often complicated by the rebates, tax incentives and disincentives dished out by the government so take as much time as the sums are huge.
So buying for fun or a few years, then flipping the car may not be possible or will require more financial clout now. Therefore, the focus may shift away from features to dependability and other more long term factors.
Right now, one of the hottest search term is "best car to get in Singapore that is worth renewing COE" and I offer the Rs..
R - reliability -- doesn't apply to those who have deeper wallets and can consider brands / models which are cool, stylish and packed with features. Others may consider traditional brands that are not flashy, even boring and contain swathes of hard plastic, but promise trouble free motoring for a decade and beyond.
R - range -- once you consider an EV, this comes into play because an affordable EV may have a smaller battery and if you get buyer's remorse, changing that car may prove to be costly
Repairs -- with so many companies out there, who will be left standing after a decade? BYD and Tesla for example are likely to survive the brutal wars, but even traditional brands from Japan have suffered and some have not sold a single car in a year. Also consider ease of access to spares, and maintenance appointments
Resale - this may not be a consideration for all, but some brands will be less desirable in the second hand market
Anyway, let the dust settle, see what beckons. I had plenty of fun in an SUV in rough terrain recently and my own journey has come to a fortunate conclusion for now. Will post a review soon
