First, I will go through a summary of my thought process for buying this amp.

Having started off my Digital Home Theatre journey with a Marantz DP 780 processor, before I moved onto the SR 19, 18 and 12, it has always been my aim to own a Marantz HDMI equipped AVR.

However the earlier version lacked the processing power of the other brands, and were always one or two steps behind.

So I went with their cousins, Denon, and owned the 2809, 4311, 4520 and 7200W in quick succession. Even so, I always felt that the Marantz sound appealed to me more, and with advent of the current Atmos, HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2 equipped models, I leapt at the first chance to get one locally.

As usual the technical specs from their official website first:

Overview
Immerse yourself in thrilling 3D surround sound with the Marantz SR7010 AV receiver, which features Dolby Atmos surround decoding for the ultimate home theater listening experience with today's blockbuster soundtracks. And, via a firmware update (available via future firmware update), the SR7010 will be able to decode forthcoming DTS:X immersive surround soundtracks. Both Dolby Atmos and DTS:X feature object-based surround sound with the ability to drive overhead speakers to deliver the ultimate immersive 3D audio experience. Featuring an advanced video processing and switching section, the SR7010 features full 4K Ultra HD connectivity and HDCP 2.2 compliance.
Equipped with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with dual diversity antennas, the SR7010 lets you listen to your favourite music from streaming service Spotify Connect, and you can listen to any of thousands of internet radio stations. You can also stream your favourite tracks wirelessly from your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad via AirPlay.“

What's new in the 2015 model compared to previous model (SR-7009)?

32-bit DAC (AK4458VN) for all channels
DTS:X with Neural:X upmixer (via firmware update fall 2015)
HDCP 2.2
HDMI 2.0a (HDR)
WiFi - 802.11n
New iOS/Android Marantz Remote app (avail fall 2015)
Plus a line about a 're-tuned' sound compared to the 7009 - will see what that is about!

____________________________________________________

Some useful improvements that I like (the bits in bold in particular):

- the latest HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2 specifications on all 8 HDMI inputs. With 4K Ultra HD 60Hz video, 4:4:4 Pure Color sub-sampling, High Dynamic Range (HDR) and 21:9 video, 3D, and BT.2020 pass-through support on every input
- 8 HDMI inputs
- 13.2 main zone pre-outs but only 11 active channels
- separate controls for 2 channel playback, which allows you to select Large or Small speaker with or without the use of the subwoofer
- Potential for an upgrade to DTS-X free
- ISF Certification (allows different Day/Night video calibration settings per input)
- Bluetooth built in for wireless streaming plus Airplay and you can control the volume via the iTunes interface of your PC / Mac
- faster WiFi - 802.11n
- Networking and WiFi built in, with support for DSD and hi-rez (192kHZ) FLAC and WAV files via network stream or USB
- A new “TV Audio On/Off” setting to defeat the annoying auto switching caused by an HDMI-CEC ARC connection
- Smart buttons on the remote (ala Quick Select buttons on the Denon)
- Return of the "Channel Level" on screen menu for on the fly adjustments to all channels (note that for the first time this setting is per input not per surround mode)
- Expanded "Option" menu for on-the-fly audio/video adjustments (the "Setup" menus will now be reserved for more global adjustments)
4 pieces of 32 bit Sharc DSP processors that IMO did make a difference in HT and steering.
- The 4 ohm capability.
- 30 000 uF of capacitance, similar to the SR 7009 but inferior to the Denon 7200 with 44 000
- Audyssey XT 32 AND Sub EQ
- new AKM AK4458VN  DACs X 2 . They are 8 channel DACs and the amp gets two of them. These are 32 bit, but aren't the same as the top of the line ones used in the Denon 7200 or AV 8802 (which get one DAC per channel - wow!).
- Improved GUI. The entire user interface can now be regarded as a wonderful experience, instead of merely painful for the experienced user, or very daunting for the newbie.
-     Ability to save configurations
-    NOT totally Free assign amps – you can use the front channels to power the rear heights if you use an external amp for the fronts (The Denon 7200W offers more customization)
-    Decent built speaker posts. Not WBT standard but certainly better than those on amps like the Emotivas or even the NAD / Onkyos.
-     Gold plated RCA inputs
- the porthole (but the main display is covered up)
- network control - cool feature indeed

What I disliked:

-     No network hub
-     No second remote
-     Only one set of speakers being used displayed – can only display input or output at one time. This was lost with the Denon AVR 4311, and that’s a pity.
-     No more Hi Def blue light, and merely “Dolby Atmos” on the LED screen.
-    No hard copy manual – just a tiny get started  booklet and not even a CD (actually all I need is a big diagram of the rear panel for hookup purposes)
-  The remotes codes list for other brand remotes is missing from the manual
- The remote is backlit but lacks the motion sensor of the Denon 7200
- only one USB port and it’s in front
 - made in China instead of Japan

The biggest difference compared to the Denons or other older amps?

That would be:
- HDAM modules in the pre-amp section
- Dolby Atmos (5.1.2, 5.1.4, 7.1.2)
- Dolby Surround upmixer (replaces DD PLII, DD PLIIx, DD PLIIz with both improved ambiance and control), while lower models will continue to use DD PLII, DD PLIIx, and DD PLIIz
No DSU for the DTS-MA, although there is talk of a fix – to use the DSU, you need to decode the DTS-MA track in the Blu Ray player and send the signal as a LPCM signal.

Plus the potential to upgrade to Auro-3D. And there is also talk of DTS X for this model.

Anyway, so how does it all hang together?

As mentioned earlier, I use the Marantz mainly in HT, so that’s where I will be spending most time describing it. I also use it mainly as a processor, with the internal amps driving the Atmos Height speakers only. The PM 11 S3 stereo amp is used to power the Front speakers, whilst the Rotel RMB 1585 powers the centre, side and back surrounds.

Setup:

D&M revamped their user interface for 2014, but this amp is even easier to setup, from the way the GUI brings you through the various steps, to the use of the microphone for the calibration, and one can almost forgo the manual in setting up this machine. Furthermore, upon newly starting up the amp, it will ask you if you want to re-configure the internal amps to power the Heights, so you won't need to enter the configuration segment at all if you set it up properly at the first go.

There are no remote codes for Oppo, so you have to use the learning function.

The Audyssey calibration was also faster. The inclusion of labels for the speakers and connectors was a nice touch. The little rocket tripod for holding the microphone was another.

If you're using an external amp to power the front sound stage of LCR, then go into the manual configuration of amp assign as follows:

Amp Assign: 11.1
Height Speakers: 4 Height Speakers
Height Layout: HT1 + HT2
Wide/HT 2: HT2
Pre-out: Front + Front Wide (doesn't matter not using Front Wide)

So after all the pre-amble, how does it sound?

I personally felt the HT experience without Atmos or DSU was very similar to the older Denon flagships. The steering has improved vastly IMO, over the older 4311, which was one of the first in the world with Audyssey XT 32. The information retrieval from a movie is on par with the 7200, or 4520, which were very good and involving. What impressed me was the ability to paint an integrated soundscape, that flowed from one direction to another, and was not confined to a speaker box. Compared to the recent Sony STR 1060 in my possession, Audyssey does wonders for the bass, and also the whole integration of sound was superior.

The HT experience not also similar to the Denon AVR 4100 that I had in my home. (http://peteswrite.blogspot.sg/2014/11/denon-x4100-review.html)

But the real improvement was when Atmos or DSU was engaged. The surround experience was taken to a new level. I found that the quality of the Atmos / DSU presentation was not inferior to that of the Denon 7200.
The same level of space and 3 dimensional sound landscape was present. Information and detail were also as good, and this could be a result of both amps having the same 4 Sharc 32 bit DSP chips. If you are new to Atmos, the experience is very impressive, and DSU also gives a more involving HT experience. If you are an old hand at Atmos, you will find the experience as good as it can get.

Surround effects were crisp, well placed and yet you feel well immersed with the lights down, you lose track of where the speakers are, and simply enjoy the HT experience. Sound effects came from points in space, and you could trace the movement of bullets and planes flying about you.

When you partner it with a nice set of speakers, you can really retrieve details; it was clear without being fatiguing. I also feel it’s a little less bright than the 4520 or the 7200W. It made listening to the soundtrack just a tad smoother, and yet clearer for me.

Instead of the Dialogue Enhancer which primarily focuses on the "vocal frequencies" (ie. 1k-3k), which is quite useful to help you follow the dialogue on the screen without having to turn up the volume to maddening levels, the 7010 has the "Dialog Level Adjustment" which is featured on all the lower models (to include the SR7702MKII & 7010) and simply adjusts the center speaker volume level as a whole.

I watched Sherlock Holmes I, and the details, steering, and soundtrack musicality are simply wonderful. But I would say, from memory, the Denon 7200's dialogue enhancer seems a little superior in it's application.

Audyssey XT 32 and in particular the Sub HT EQ allows calibration to be done with great ease, but you still need to check the levels and tweak them after that.

You will still need a SPL meter, but the Marantz has made the previously daunting task of setting up a solid and seamless surround home theatre experience, very sweet indeed.

The 7010 is a really sweet sounding receiver.

Soundwise, I don't miss the Denon 7200 at all. It's the little mod-cons that are the difference actually.

The remote is poorer built, the innards seem less quality, but from a purely sound and function perspective, it has been all pretty good so far!

If there are people waiting to jump on, and do not need the extra little power from the 7200, do not mind the lesser build, and the country of origin, then the 7010 is a very solid amp and a good bargain. I don't know how much better the 7702 MK II will sound, but here is a product that gives you most if not all of that, plus built in amps that you can use for the ceiling speakers, whilst allowing you to use it as a processor and add on substantive power amps for the money you save from buying the Denon 7200. You also save on a few pairs of interconnects by buying this instead of a pure processor like the 7702 MK II.

Happy owner.

What about music?

The general sonic signature of this amp is highly dependent on the partnering equipment and speakers, but if you are after the classic Marantz sound, you won’t be disappointed.

Those HDAM modules do make a difference, and adds a high level of musicality, that differentiates it from other AVRs. Good warm sound, without sacrificing detail and it will be impressive enough for those who do HT and dabble in music too. I acknowledge it's not a fair comparison, but I still prefer my PM 11 for music.

In stereo or direct mode, there is a decent attempt at making good music. But compared to the PM 11 S3, the soundscape tends to be flat and two-dimensional.

I also made extensive use of the Airplay function, which I found to be very impressive. The sound quality from it was as good and you have the option of playing back DSD tracks. And the playback function is simple to use. The Blutooth experience was entirely serviceable, but ultimately lo-fi.

Video:

Switching back to HT again, and trying out the video section, you will find a very competent video chip for upscaling and the colors are quite good. It is a tough call for me to decide on whether I will go direct from my Oppo 105 or use the internal chip. But with 4k and HDMI 2.0a, it is likely that I will employ the AVR more in transmitting video. The ISF modes are quite close to my pre-calibrated modes going direct from the Oppo to my Samsung TV.

With 8 HDMI inputs, three HDMI outputs (two are mirror outputs), legacy inputs and even a phono input, plus a 7.1 analogue input, you are well covered and won’t lack much in terms of connectivity. The feature list is indeed very impressive. Build quality is fairly decent, but it’s not reference level build quality. The sheet metal is thin, and you get a tinny sound when you tap the metal, but at least the amp is well put together.

It also has two 12v triggers, and whilst it can do 13.2 outputs, you can only use 11.2 at once time. The nice touch is the inclusion of the RC-5 triggers for a Marantz system.

After a whole night of use, it's quite warm to the touch, so you should still give it plenty of space. I use a laptop fan as well, which is powered by the internal USB port.

So where does all this put the amp?

Well, if you have the older non Atmos amps, and won’t be upgrading to Atmos anytime soon, enjoy what you have. Most of the home theatre functions are carried over.

For fans of the Marantz sound, and have an older model, you will feel right at home with this. The sound quality is comparable but the new DAC and DSP chipset will make this a nice amp for both music and HT. If you want to give the Marantz sound a try, then you will also enjoy this amp very much.

Chinese manufacturing makes this amp reasonably affordable, with a long feature list and support for the latest HDMI, HDCP and 4k specs.

If you are in the market for a mid to high level receiver, or a processor on the cheap with free internal amps throw in, then this amp should be on your shortlist. You get
a considerable number of additional features and later this year, the upgrade to DTS X.

To use the 12v DC trigger, you need a stereo cable. Do switch off the amp before you try any connections, or you risk damaging the trigger electronics.

  1. Hi Pete,
Thanks for such interesting article. I'm currently thinking about changing my old Denon avr-4311 for this Marantz and found your blog. I currently face issue streaming HD audio file (24bit) from my Synology nas to my Denon... Furthermore, the Denon "menu" is not userfriendly and I was told that Marantz was better.
I read that you had tested both amp. So your advices would help for my future selection!
    Thank you, Cheers. Henri

  2. Hi Henri
I don't using a Synology - I use iTunes and I have no issues with Airplay. Using a Macbook to play music to the 7010 is also seamless.

  3. In the S&V review: the 7010 measured 83w times 7. Not bad - lower than what the Denon 4520 measured and probably the 7200. It does better compared to its predecessor the 7008. Which is a little surprising since they have a similar power supply .. The older model does 68w times 7.
Most domestic users with the usual HT speakers and a sub will find both of them quite adequate.

  4. Hello Pete,
Thanks for the nice covered review.
Would like to ask about what you mean that atmos HT experience with sr7010 is not similar with denon's 4100.
Can you please refer to differences and an overall opinion, which one is better and at which sections?
I am among these two models and would like your help to come to a decision.
    Thanks in advance,
    Giorgos

    1. The sonic signature of both amps are different, and the DACs, DSP used are also different. The HT performance will be marginal, but only the 7010 can process 11 channels for a full Atmos / DTS-X experience. An audition will be needed to assess whether the incremental difference in sound meets your needs. Cheers!

  5. Hi Pete,
    Great read !
Can you tell me a little bit about assigning the Front left and rights (FLR) to a different function and using the FLR Pre Outs to feed a 2 channel stereo amp.
Is this possible (I assume it is) and if so will Audyssey still be in the loop for the FRL speakers ?
    Regards , Alex.

    1. Yes you can add a stereo amp if it has HT bypass. If you aren't sure what that is, you will need to read up on it first. Audyssey is in the loop if you calibrate it with the Audyssey first. You should post in the relevant forums of your country (UK / USA) if you need more help, and most importantly, read the manual first on how to hook up your amp, cheers.

  6. For factory reset, you'll need to hold down the music and movies buttons whilst switching the amp on. Wait for it to flash and then release.

  7. Hi Pete,
Got my 7010 and am really liking it but have got a lot of learning to do !
One snag I hit was with the Audyssey set up.
I hope you are able to put me right.
I did everything as instructed but only did a temporary job as I can't fit my full complement of speakers just yet.
My fronts are Q Acoustic Concept 20 speakers that are rated to go down to 64 HZ.
I use an SVS subwoofer and their recommendation for the crossover value for the combination of that subwoofer with the Concepts was 80 Hz.
My surrounds are Q Acoustics 2010i which are rated to go to 68Hz.
Audyssey set the Concepts to a crossover value of 200Hz and the surrounds to 60 Hz.
I have double checked the connections and all is as it should be.
I'm thinking I should set both the crossovers to 80 but if I do will that affect the other parts of the automatic setup?
Another issue , that I have just noticed when writing this, is that typed text is appearing with some letters blue, some orange and some as they should be. Wierd !
Any ideas would be most welcome Pete .
    Regards Alex.

  8. Hi Pete,

Thank you for the very good article on the Marantz 7010.

From what I read in your article it seems that the Marantz 7010 supports a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 (or 7.2.4) configuration with an external stereo amplifier.

I would like to confirm that it is possible to configure the external stereo amplifier to drive the main speaker pair and that the configuration the one you described:

    Amp Assign: 11.1
    Height Speakers: 4 Height Speakers
    Height Layout: HT1 + HT2
    Wide/HT 2: HT2
Pre-out: Front + Front Wide (doesn't matter not using Front Wide)

    Regards,
    Fausto
